The Iconic Silverton Hotel

There is nothing like a cold one for slaying the thirst during the long, hot summer and in Australia’s baked and sometimes absurdly hot Outback, a beer is almost like an end-of-day transfusion. For people that know us we love a beer and one of our many bucket list items is to visit as many outback aussie pubs as possible. The Silverton Hotel in Outback New South Wales ranks highly as one of Australia’s best outback pubs. Let us give you the run down on this ripper country pub.

Where to find the Silverton Hotel

For a visit to Silverton, its is a leisurely 20 minute drive from Broken Hill, NSW, Australia. Upon your arrival into Silverton, its  almost instantly like a ride back in a time machine. The bitumen road ends and turns to dirt. The front of the pub and surrounding roads are all dirt. It’s literally like a you’re in a country and western movie. Theres dogs and donkeys. Yes donkeys, strolling the streets and there is even a water trough for the animals.

The History of Silverton

The most interesting thing we learnt while at our visit to the Silverton Hotel was that the Broken Hill Propriety Company Limited (BHP) was formed in the De Borne’s Hotel, which is the current site of the Silverton Hotels Accommodation which dates back to 1885. To think that BHP started in this iconic place is remarkable.

The Iconic Film Location

The Silverton is probably the most easily recognisable Outback pub in Australia, having featured in numerous television adverts and played a part in movies like Mad Max, A Town Like Alice and Wake In Fright among many others.  Located close to Mundi Mundi plains, the Silverton Hotel is  surrounded by galleries and outdoor works by local artists, including Peter Browne’s quirkily decorated Volkswagen beetles.

Take a Step Back in Time at the Silverton Hotel

The staff are friendly and we got to spend a bit of time with the one of the owners of the hotel telling us about the history of the hotel, what upgrades they have done and their future plans. For the 70 year old owners, bloody thumbs up to you! They clearly have passion for this hotel and it shows in the workmanship and expansion of the hotel. The large beer garden has many seated areas that are mostly undercover. There is a stage for the many events held at the hotel, a popular event  is the Silverton Sunsets Music Festival. For all the details on this festival visit their website. Inside the pub there are many quirky signs on the roof and lots of memorabilia from the movies that have been filmed out here.

Silverton Hotel Menu- Not what you expect!

The iconic pub serves all day food starting from breakfast all the way to dinner time.  The meals are tasty and affordable. The one thing you need to be aware of is your meals are served on plastic plates. Now I’m sure your thinking, ‘What the! However it’s the owner’s decision and they use biodegradable plates that break down in landfill. Serving food this way is better for the environment and its their way to preserve their precious water source. Even if that is a bit of a downer for you, you must remember your in the Outback!!

Silverton Hotel Accomodation – The Best of the Outback

To lap up the outback lifestyle, stay on site at the Silverton Hotel. The accommodation is situated on the Hotel grounds with separate car parking and to be honest it’s bloody awesome!! The rooms are all new and very spacious. There is Queen Bed, Two Singles and a Trundle which can accommodate 5 people. The ensuite bathroom is on point, a beautifully tiled room with large shower, basin and toilet. All rooms have TV and reverse heating and cooling. The creative artwork on the walls is done by the owners. These rooms are certainly not like the dodgy outback hotel rooms you may have seen before and some of the horrible ones we have stayed in!

What is your best Aussie outback pub to visit? Lets be honest, its impossible to pick a standout.
